In House Laboratory
The centre has a well-equipped in-house laboratory with a high quality blood biochemistry analyser, blood electrolyte machine and haematology machine allowing us to perform a wide variety of blood tests.
We also have a Motic® binocular Microscope, which allows us to examine:
- Urine
- Blood cells
- Discharges
- Some lumps and bumps
Ultrasound
The centre also prizes its new Imotek® Ultrasound machine which is capable of producing images of outstanding clarity, allowing us to examine internal organs in a non-invasive manner.
We were able to see some fantastic images of the beating heart belonging to a dog in congestive heart failure.
Examining the images allowed us to choose the best course of treatment for her.
X-rays & Endoscopes
In addition, the centre also has superb digital x-ray facilities and two flexible fibre-optic endoscopes (a big one for dogs and a smaller one for cats).
The endoscopes are regularly used to examine (and sometimes take samples from) the inner surface of both the gastro-intestinal tract (throat, stomach and intestines) and the respiratory tract (nose, airway and lungs).
X-rays are frequently used as an aid to diagnosis, sometimes even using dyes, such as barium meals.
They are invaluable in the diagnosis and evaluation of:
- Fractures
- Arthritis
- Lung and heart disease
- Intestinal and bladder problems
- Some cancers
We are also happy to take hip and elbow x-rays as part of the BVA scheme.
